Statement from Haq Media and Communication on the Continued Detention of Journalist Tesfalem Waldyes Despite Court-Approved Bail

The efforts to secure the release of journalist Tesfalem Waldyes, who has been in detention for the past five days, on court-approved bail have not succeeded. The Addis Ababa Cassation Bench rejected the police’s appeal and ordered the release of Tesfalem Waldyes today, Thursday, June 12, 2025. Following the decision, efforts have been made since 3:00 PM today to deliver the document guaranteeing Tesfalem’s release to the Kirkos Sub-City Police Department. However, no responsible personnel were available to accept the order.

Haq Media and Communication has learned that the Kirkos Sub-City Police Department has intentions to hand over journalist Tesfalem Waldyes to the Federal Police.

Our organization strongly urges that the decisions of the Addis Ababa City Court of First Instance, Kirkos Divisional Court, the Addis Ababa City Court of Appeal, and the Addis Ababa City Cassation Bench be fully implemented to ensure that Tesfalem Waldyes’ right to bail is respected. Furthermore, we urge institutions and individuals concerned about justice to voice their support for respecting the court’s decision.
